We have an excellent fish market in town, Empire Fish. I don’t get there as often as I like but we want to go weekly. They have a great selection and the fish is fresh. They are one of the main suppliers to restaurants in the area. I was there last week. When I go I usually just check out what looks good and what’s on sale. I picked up a walleye fillet and a couple of soft-shell crabs for our supper. The previous week they had monk fish on sale. We love monk fish. But this week, they had monk fish livers! I had never heard of them before, let alone seen them. They look pretty much like what you’d imagine (and that’s sort of disgusting.) I asked the monger what you do with monk fish livers. He said he had no idea. Someone had ordered a couple of pounds of them and they just put the rest of what they received on sale. Today starts our first delivery of the season of our farm (a CSa – community supported agriculture.) This first delivery will include: This week's vegetables: lettuce, spinach, scallions, strawberries, zucchini, mushrooms, cilantro, garlic scapes, pea shoots, broccoli (half shares) The season always starts a little slow. We’re not getting the “greens” share this year. It was just two much for the two of us. But we are getting the eggs again. We also will be getting bread from Real Bread, an artisinal bakery in Fond du Lac. It has been a long time since our last delivery. We’re looking forward to starting up again. Eat Your view! The summer has begun. I am certainly not a fan of hot weather, but for the most part summers in Milwaukee are beautiful. We have maybe two or three hot streaks where the temperature gets to ninety an humid, but with an air conditioner in the bedroom, we survive. We almost never leave town in the summer because there is always so much to do here. Along with the ethnic festivals and Summerfest on the lakefront, there are myriad street festivals, city festivals (Tosafest is September 10th), and church festivals. This weekend we have Grecian Fest at Sts Constantine and Helen and Locust Street Festival. Next weekend is Polish Fest and Lakefront Festival of the Arts. (Now that we’re members of the Milwaukee Art Museum, I wonder if we get in free. I doubt it.) Our favorite festival, Bastille Days, runs July 8-11. If you don’t have fun in Milwaukee in the summer, you’re just not trying. Comments (6) | Add as favourites (11) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 65 | E-mail |
