In the past week, two different friends of our independently recommended that we see Angels & Demons, the movie based on the Dan Brown book of the same name. I liked the book. Certainly the criticism is legitimate. The characters are one dimensional. The history and the theology are wrong. But it is fiction and he does write a fun page turner. We even went to see two of the churches he wrote about in the Da Vinci Code, St Sulpice in Paris and the Temple Church in London. St Sulpice had a display code welcoming Da Vinci Code readers, saying that everything in the book about the church was wrong, and please leave a donation. We did not like the Da Vinci Code movie and Angels & Demons was equally disappointing. Don’t waste your time. Sean Carroll is a molecular biologist who teaches at the University of Wisconsin and writes the monthly Remarkable Creatures column in the New York Times. He is frequently a guest on Wisconsin Public Radio and was recently interviewed on 60 Minutes. I did not see it because it was during the Packer playoff game. (The Saints-Viking game was really fun. The Vikings were clearly the better team but you can’t give the ball away 5 times and expect to win.) The last time he was on Kathleen Dunn’s show he talked about that interview. Apparently he discussed the possibility of putting woolly mammoth DNA into an elephant egg and bringing a mammoth back to life. That would be pretty cool, but why a mammoth? I think a better idea would be to bring back Passenger pigeons. It would be neat to have a mammoth in a zoo, but it’s unlikely we would reintroduce them into the wild. But we could do that with Passenger pigeons and they could fill the ecological niche that they vacated only a century ago. According to Politico, former governor Tommy Thompson may run for Senate against Russ Feingold. Another candidate, Terrance Wall, also announced his candidacy, but he’s a political nobody. It’s time for the filibuster to go. I can’t see it happening, but it is paralyzing our government. Here’s an excellent piece on the topic.
